Brad Pitt plays Jerry Welbach a pretty unsuccessful “bagman” who is trying to leave his gangster ways in part to satisfy his girlfriend Samantha (Julia Roberts). Because of the trouble he has caused with his previous assignments, his boss won’t just let him go. He makes him earn the right to leave (and live) by completing one last mission which entails traveling south of the border to retrieve a priceless pistol called the “Mexican”. This not only puts a rift in his relationship with Samantha, but his trip to Mexico ensues a lot of danger and many unexpected twists and turns. I found myself laughing more than expected in this action/comedy.
I was shocked by sensual scenes (between men), as it is not noted on any reviews I have read on this film. These scenes made me uncomfortable, and unable to truly recommend this movie.(surprisingly there were no scenes between Brad and Julia). There is vivid gangster-type violence (murders, etc) and strong language in this movie, making it inappropriate. In addition, the plot is weak and “The Mexican” is long and drawn-out, making two straight hours seem more like three. Although some parts are entertaining, I have a hard time recommending this movie as a wholesome use of your time. | | |
