Armed With Strength
Greg Bodzioch - Monday, May 07, 2001

"...It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he enables me to stand on the heights. He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. You give me your shield of victory, and your right hand sustains me; you stoop down to make me great."    Psalms 18:32-35

God has blessed two awesome sisters in the UC Davis Campus Ministry with great achievements in their respective sports! Jenny Cain throws the hammer for the UC Davis Track and Field Team, and Poppy Major performs the vault and floor exercises for UC Davis Gymnastics. Both have been training for a long time and acknowledge that only through God have they been able to experience great success.

Recently, for the third year in a row, Poppy was named an All-American in the floor exercise at the USA Collegiate Gymnastics National Championships! She has been training in gymnastics since the age of 8, and since being at Davis has been key to the team's success, including an NCAA Division I-AA National Championship in 1999. Her coach shares, "Poppy is the hardest worker on the team, and she owns the co-record at UC Davis with a score of 9.95 on the floor exercise. She is a great teammate, contributes to the team, leads by example, and she is very loyal."

Poppy also was acknowledged as an Academic All-American this year, and she is excited about serving in the HOPE Youth Corps this year in Russia. She became a disciple in November 1999 and has inspired the UC Davis campus ministry with her loving heart and contagious joy. This past quarter, even through all her training, competing, and academics, she remained focused on her mission and helped a young woman study the Bible and get baptized!

Poppy shares that the thing God is teaching her now through Bible study and prayer is a need for deep relationships. Earlier in life she intensely focused on training and class work and avoided what she felt at the time was "wasting time" with people, in order to be perfect. She now realizes life is really about deep relationships strengthening and perfecting her life, not what she can do.

Jenny, a senior at Davis, broke the UC Davis school record in the Hammer Throw this season and went on to break her own twice more! She is ranked fifth nationally for continuous performances with her longest throw at a distance of 168 feet. She will be competing at the NCAA Division II Track and Field Nationals in Illinois at the end of May! Ken Norlen, Jenny's coach, had this to say about her: "Jenny is very coachable, and has a great attitude about life and throwing. She has improved her throws by 24 ft in the last two months, which has given a real scare for the leaders. Jenny is the hardest worker on the team; she is out here practicing in the cold and rain and in 110 degree heat when everybody else decides to stay at home. She is very family oriented, which I believe has helped her succeed. She has the potential to be national champ and compete in the Olympics."

Jenny is learning to have confidence in God and to trust Him to carry her through to victory. According to Jenny, "this has made all the difference." Jenny helps lead the teen ministry and was fruitful earlier this year. Also, Jenny's older brother, younger sister, sister-in-law, and mom are all disciples, and they encourage and support her greatly in all she does.
