 | He Hula'd His Way Into My Heart.... Lisha Oliveira, Hilo, Hawaii - Wednesday, February 12, 2003
In the spring of 1994, I met Stan at a hula performance on Oahu. I remember watching him dance and thinking "Wow!" He was not, however, a disciple, so I had to guard my heart, stay open, and continue to focus on dating and encouraging the brothers.
Later, I was part of the church planting on the island of Maui. Meanwhile, Stan studied the Bible and became a disciple. I recognized him but never really paid attention to him because I was interested in another brother. Every time I visited Oahu, I would run into Stan. Once I got his address and wrote him a long letter, but he never wrote back, so I figured that it was a dead end.
Shortly after the brother I was interested in walked away from God, I decided to move back to Oahu to pursue a graduate degree. A month before moving, I ran into Stan at a wedding. When I told him that I was returning to Oahu, he suggested we go on a date after I arrived. "Wow!" became the old impression with a new twist.
When I returned, we were busy leading different groups until we found ourselves planning a singles' event together, and notorious matchmakers Dave and Robyn Kim arranged a date for us. After the date, we knew that the days of praying for that special someone were over. We dated for only four months before he proposed and were married six months later. Our four years of marriage have been such an adventure; Stan is my dream come true.
Eight months ago, we were asked to move to Hilo, Hawaii as the first couple in Oceania to lead a church while working full-time jobs. We know that God brought us together to be our best for him, to get each other to Heaven, and all the glory goes to him. | |
