 | A Broken Bone Makes For a Memorable Night Erica Hernandez, San Francisco - Thursday, February 13, 2003
In seven years of marriage, my husband Andrew and I have made many special Valentine memories -- from the time the married women in our sector sang a pathetic rendition of "Dangerous Man" at midweek service to the year he surprised me with a room at a local inn.
One of my favorite memories is from 2001. On Super Bowl Sunday, 34 weeks pregnant, I took one step out the door to go to church and broke a bone in my foot. Five days later, I fell off my crutches, so my doctor put me on strict bed rest until I could manage a cane. For three weeks, I could only leave my bed (assisted) to take a shower. I even had an invalid potty chair so I didn't have to trek to the bathroom! I had hoped to have a special Valentine getaway or at least a fancy dinner out before our second child was born in mid-March, but that wasn't going to happen. We found a single sister to take our daughter out for the evening and ordered Chinese food from our favorite local place. I couldn't get dressed up, but I did at least put on a red maternity shirt for the occasion. We ate, chatted, then nodded off for a nap! It wasn't fancy and wasn't passionate, but it was memorable and just what we needed.
This Valentine's Day promises to be another memorable one. Once again, I fell on Super Bowl Sunday, this time breaking my ankle. I'm not on bed rest, but we certainly won't be doing any dancing on Friday. My parents are going to babysit for the weekend, and we'll go out for a low-key dinner someplace where I can put my leg up. I have a feeling this will be another special memory... | |
