She Puts Her Hope in God
Ria Hutabarat, San Francisco, CA - Saturday, May 10, 2003

In 1945, nurses in war-torn England told Margaret Bycroft that her mother would die of tuberculosis.  "No she won't!" came Margaret's stubborn reply.  The family prayed earnestly, her mother was cured, hospital staff were amazed, and Mary Bycroft went on to live another forty years.

Meanwhile, Margaret moved to Australia to teach, married an Indonesian man named Franke Hutabarat, and had three children -- Simon, Melati and Ria.  Margaret maintained her faith in God; many times the family prayed together, and the prayers were answered in a powerful way.  Franke was also a believer and started an Indonesian community church in Sydney.  The kids grew up going to church until they drifted away due to not comprehending the services conducted in Indonesian, being disillusioned, and disagreeing regarding financial matters and behavior between church members.

By the late 1980s, the five family members attended four separate churches, and Simon stopped attending church altogether.  Margaret began to pray with determination for the whole family to worship God together.

In 1988, Simon was met by disciples at the University of New South Wales and made a decision to become a Christian.  He invited his mother and sisters to come and study the Bible, but they stopped after a time.  Two years later, while facing marriage problems, Margaret reconsidered her studies, repented and became a true disciple.  After her baptism, Margaret and Franke enjoyed a much-improved relationship until he died suddenly six months later.  Margaret then moved to Indonesia where she taught in schools, became a "mum" to many of the believers, and was the educational director of the HOPE worldwide orphanage near Jakarta.  For seven years, she continued to pray and fast once a week for her family to be able to worship God together.

After seven years, Ria resumed studying the Bible while facing a marital separation and became a Christian in Canberra, Australia.  A year later, Melati and her husband Iwan moved from Jakarta to Sydney to improve their relationship, and they were also baptised.  Today nine members of their family are followers of Christ, and they continue to pray for their extended family to worship God together.  God has done great things for them and has given them a sense of freedom, relief, and joy.  Simon is an orthopedic surgeon and lives in Sydney with his wife Martina and daughter Zara.  Ria lives in the San Francisco Bay Area where she moved to fulfill a dream to study at UC Berkeley. She now works as a city planner while serving in the music ministry.  Melati and Iwan have four lively, loving children and own their own cleaning business in Sydney.  Iwan's siblings Alex, Irma, and Fransien are also disciples and help the church in Indonesia.

On 26 April, 2003, Margaret had a stroke and was rushed to intensive care.  She was unable to speak and lost some movement in her right side.  On Monday, 28 April, she went into a coma and came to the brink of death as her family and many friends prayed desperately for her recovery.  Like her own mother half a century earlier, Margaret survived surgery and impressed hospital staff with a rapid recovery -- being moved from ICU to the regular ward and rehabilitation within a week and a half.  Today she is humbly relearning to talk, read, write, and carry out everyday activities.

Margaret Hutabarat is a woman who puts her hope in God.  She loves God and her family, is devoted to prayer and the word, has pure and honest relationships, applies her mind to learning, and embraces past and present trials with a spirit of adventure.  I'm grateful that Margaret Hutabarat is my mum.  I thank God for her and love her very much.
